FIGMENT DC Announces Call for Art Submissions

DMV Community Funds Free, Participatory Art Event to be held in Anacostia Park, September 27-28

WASHINGTON, DC – Organizers of FIGMENT DC have announced this week that they are now accepting art submissions for the free, inclusive, participatory art event FIGMENT—taking  place September 27-28, 2014, in the park space near the Anacostia Park Skating Pavilion. As part of an international grassroots effort held in multiple cities that draws tens of thousands of participants each year, the 3rd annual FIGMENT DC draws upon the growing momentum of DC denizens’ support and attendance, and is able to proceed with the artist submission process after successfully crowdfunding more than $8,000 to make the event happen.

Centered around 11 fundamental principles—Participation, Decommodification, Inclusion, Self-Expression, Self-Reliance, Giving, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leave-no-trace, Immediacy, and Gratitude—FIGMENT DC calls for all manner of creative minds to submit their concept for a participatory artistic contribution to this year’s event. Artists are encouraged to think outside the box and create art with which anyone can engage and play. Previous projects have included inflatable art, social experiments, mobile art, street theatre, community building projects, sound art, workshops and seminars, music performance, as well asdance and motion art. FIGMENT DC,seeks all forms of inclusive, active artistic work that thrive outside the confines of traditional museum space.

“As we enter the summer festival season, we want people to know that FIGMENT is one of DC's only free, outdoor events that encourages people to create, engage and play at this scale. This is not about being a passive consumer of art or music. It's about connecting with each other and free, self-expression,” said Patty Simonton, co-producer of FIGMENT DC 2014. “Because FIGMENT is a free event with no corporate sponsorship and open to anyone who wants to participate, we are erasing boundaries. At FIGMENT DC, everyone is the artist, and we’re all co-creators of the art. There’s really nothing else like this in DC—and we’re looking forward to the most art-filled, playful  FIGMENT DC yet!”

An opportunity for local artists to engage with a diverse audience and share their work and vision, FIGMENT DC is a family-friendly, free outdoor event open to the public. FIGMENT DC builds community among urban residents and suburbanites alike, as we all collaborate together in generating our collective FIGMENT experience in the beautiful and underutilized outdoor space of Anacostia Park—a magical, colorful playground that everyone can enjoy.

Everyone is invited to submit their concept for an art project to occur at FIGMENT DC, by filling out the submission form on the FIGMENT DC website: http://dc.figmentproject.org/submit_a_project. Planners are anticipating record turnout for both art submissions and attendance this year, as the greater DC metropolitan area demonstrated substantial support for the event’s crowdfunding campaign, which raised over $8,000 to fund the necessary amenities and services to make FIGMENT DC happen.
